Your Guide to June in Pittsburgh

🦦 Go For a Swim

Nothing beats spending the day poolside and there are plenty of options to dive into. City pools are “tentatively” scheduled to open on June 15. There’s no full list of which pools will open as of this writing, but a city spokesperson said the hope is to have at least 15 of the 18 public pools active — that’s how many were open last year. Daily admission is $5, so my advice is to buy a pass. It starts at $30 per person, so if you go more than six times it will pay for itself.

Allegheny County pools — including the wave pools at Boyce Park, Settler’s Cabin, and South Park — will open for the season on June 1. As for the Bloomfield “beach,” it looks like maintenance is on track but there’s no word on whether it will actually open this year.

🍩 Find a Sweet Treat

It is my civic duty to tell you that June 7 is National Donut Day, so plan accordingly. You can pick up old standards from places like Oliver’s Donuts in Lawrenceville or Oram’s Donut Shop in Beaver Falls, but I encourage you to be bold and try one of the specialties at Lola’s Eatery. This is donut-adjacent, but I would risk it all for the ube cinnamon roll. If you need more donut suggestions, we rounded up the best donuts in Pittsburgh.

If you prefer your sugar directly from the source, try picking your own fruit. Soergel Orchards is hosting its annual Strawberry Festival on June 1. The strawberries and lavender are also ready to pick at Triple B Farms in Monongahela — they’re open daily.

🎉 Reasons to Celebrate

Not that I need one, but there are plenty of reasons to party this month. Pride festivities kicked off last month and they’re just getting started.

Father’s Day is also fast approaching. I hate to play into the stereotype, but if you celebrate the holiday, stop by the special edition Cars & Coffee car show in Robinson on June 16 or go for a Father’s Day cruise and buffet on the Gateway Clipper. For more wild vibes, the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium has free admission for dads on June 16.

Pittsburgh is having its first city-sponsored Juneteenth celebration this year. It will be organized by William “B” Marshall, who has put on Juneteenth events for more than a decade.

The City Cast Pittsburgh podcast has even more June recommendations, including camping, how to make jam with all that fruit you picked, and even a pogo stick competition.
