Farmers markets are cropping up all over town, and we want to help you make the most of it. Here’s a list of do's and don’ts with help from Christina Howell, executive director of the Bloomfield Development Corporation.

✅ DO

Bring Your Own Bags

The city is working on a plastic bag ban, so you might as well get in the habit now. Plus, who doesn’t love a cute market tote? Check out this “Thank Yinz” bag from Commonwealth Press or the veggie and berry totes from one of my favorite local designers, Jenna Vandenbrink.

Ask Questions

Farmers and vendors love sharing information and tips about their products. Don’t be afraid to ask for their favorite recipes, too!

Bring Multiple Forms of Payment

While credit and debit are accepted by most vendors, cash will always be king because of processing fees. Bring a couple forms of payment just to be safe. Plus, SNAP and WIC recipients can use those funds through Just Harvet’s Fresh Access program. For every $5 spent, shoppers get an extra $2 in to spend on fruits and veggies.

🚫 DON’T

Haggle Prices

Farmers and vendors know what their products are worth, and they aren’t trying to make an enormous profit. Be a kind neighbor, and pay for their hard labor.

Unleash Your Beast

We love farmers markets because they’re pet friendly, but it’s important to keep them close and scoop the poop.

Take a Joy Ride

It’s great that we have markets in walkable and bikeable areas, but it creates too much traffic and can be potentially dangerous to ride your bike (or skateboard) through the market. Always walk your wheels through the vendor area.

🥚 Eggstra Tip: Howell says you sometimes have to be methodical about wagging around your market goods. Wait until the end to buy breakable items like eggs, or ask the vendor to set them aside for you on your way to the next stall.
