There aren’t many places where you can feel like you’re in country woods but still reside in the city. One such place in Pittsburgh is Observatory Hill, or Perry North, located atop the hill on the North Side. The neighborhood features stately homes, some over 100 years old — the neighborhood was founded 1894 in the former Allegheny City, then annexed into Pittsburgh in 1907.

Riverview Park, the 259-acre densely wooded greenspace with trails, a pool, playgrounds, shelters, and ballfields, is a nature oasis within the city limits.
Another true shining star? The Allegheny Observatory, one of the major astronomical research institutions in the world. In 1869, the Observatory created the Allegheny Time Service, which is believed to be the first systematic time distribution to railroads and cities; it’s also the home of the modern time system. While the space is now mostly used for research, it is occasionally open for tours. (There’s a unique opportunity this weekend.)
