Summer is finally here, and with all that warm weather comes a whole host of events, experiences, and food and drink options for Pittsburghers to take in. Settle in, and let the City Cast Pittsburgh team be your guide to July in the Burgh!
🐶 Give Furries a Warm Welcome
There’s no more time-honored summer tradition in Pittsburgh than heading Downtown during Anthrocon to marvel at all the amazing fursuits. Our city hosts one of the world’s largest furry conventions, and we’re known for making our anthropomorphic visitors feel at home.
Keep up our reputation as a furry-friendly destination by attending the Fursuit Parade & Block Party on July 6 or simply posting up at an outdoor patio Downtown anytime during the convention and cheering on furries whenever you spot them! Some bars and restaurants serve drinks in dog bowls or give out long straws that can fit through fursuit heads — these are great bets for encountering furries.
⚾ Catch a Buccos Game
Let’s be honest: the real draw at PNC Park isn’t the actual baseball game. (Sorry, Pirates — you’ll never live down your 20-year losing streak.) Maybe it’s the spectacular views of Downtown Pittsburgh. Or maybe it’s the Renegade Dog: a new footlong hot dog topped with pot roast, potato pierogies, pickles, and caramelized onions. After all, July is National Hot Dog Month!
Whatever’s luring you to the stadium this summer, make sure you arrive early if you want a giveaway item, because those things go fast! You can check out the promo schedule to learn more about giveaways, like bucket hats on July 5, Hawaiian shirts on July 6, and pierogi plushies on July 21. (Sadly, those are only available to kids 14 and under.)
🦕 Celebrate Dippy’s Birthday
This summer marks 125 years since paleontologists discovered our city’s most iconic dinosaur. Andrew Carnegie funded an expedition to “find a dinosaur for Pittsburgh” and the team uncovered a new species, named Diplodocus carnegii in his honor. It took more than 100 crates to ship Dippy’s bones to Pittsburgh; the skeleton was so massive, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History had to build a new wing to put it on display.
These days, you probably know Dippy as the beloved museum mascot with the extremely long neck. If you want to celebrate our celebrity dino, the museum is hosting a bunch of events July 12-26, from a day-long symposium on Dippy history to an after-dark rockstar bash.
The City Cast Pittsburgh podcast has even more July recommendations, including live music, a four-day pickle festival, and a road race for tiny vintage cars.
