So you’ve probably seen lists of day trips and weekend adventures to see fall foliage, but what about close to home? Here’s some ideas:

Pack a fall picnic in the park: SouthSide Riverfront Park and Trail has great access to a dog park, boat and canoe launch, and bike trail. Schenley Park has a scenic overlook where you can appreciate the colors with the background of the city skyline; don’t forget about the trails if you want to really get into some leaf crunching! At Frick Park, there’s the 5-mile loop trail that’s perfect for admiring the variety of colors. And at Allegheny Commons Park on the North Side, you can check out one of my favorite views: the blanket of yellow Ginko leaves along the train track.

Cruise on the water: Take the Gateway Clipper Fleet’s Autumn Serenade Luncheon and enjoy the lush scenery along Pittsburgh’s rivers this Friday or Saturday. It’s family friendly, but you can also have some booze with your views from the full-service bar.

Tread among the headstones: Cemeteries are a must-visit during spooky season. Take a quiet stroll through Allegheny Cemetery in Lawrenceville to see the golden, orange hues sprinkled among mausoleums and grave statues.

Take the classic routes: You simply can’t beat seeing autumn hues on a ride up the Incline, then again at the iconic view from Mount Washington, or at Point State Park.
