Pennsylvanians need to have a Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses and photo ID cards by May 7. Here’s why and how to get yours ⬇️

🪪 Why Do We Have Real IDs?

After 9/11, Congress passed the Real ID Act of 2005 to improve air travel security by creating harder-to-counterfeit IDs.

✈️ Do I Really Need One?

If you have a passport or military ID, you’re set! But if you’re an adult and don’t have either of those, you need a Real ID for domestic flights, entering some federal facilities, and getting into a military base.

  • ⭐ The state has a quiz to help you figure out if you need one. Tip: Check to see if there’s a gold star in the upper right-hand corner of your driver's license or ID card. If so, that’s a Real ID!

✅ How Do I Get a Real ID?

You can apply online if the DMV already has your documents. To find that out, use their pre-verification form. If the DMV doesn’t have your information — but you have a commercial driver license or you're a lawfully present non-U.S. citizen* — you’ll have to apply for a Real ID in person. Ahead of going to the DMV, you need to prepare:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of Social Security Number
  • Two proofs of current physical PA address
  • Proof of all legal name changes (if applicable)

*Lawfully present non-U.S. citizens have different required documents.

While you can apply for a Real ID at all DMVs (and receive your card in 15 days), only some will issue a card the day of. The closest location to Pittsburgh is the Bridgeville DMV on Washington Pike.
