If Troy Hill is the finish line, then Rialto Street is the trail to climb. Just off of East Ohio Street at the 31st Street Bridge, Rialto’s 24% grade earns it the title of fifth steepest street in the city. Once you make it up the mount, you’re welcomed into this tight-knit North Side community.
1 Thing to Know
Rialto Street (mentioned above) also used to be called “Pig Hill,” when pigs were herded up the hill from the Herr’s Island stockyards to slaughterhouses in Spring Garden. Yikes!
Eat & Drink
De Fer Coffee & Tea took the place of a former neighborhood favorite, Pear and the Pickle, at the top of Rialto Street. Inside, you’ll find a cozy space serving coffee, tea, and homemade food like sandwiches, salads, smoothies, and fresh pastries. It also has a market section with coffee beans, candles, chocolate, and other goodies.
Coming Soon
The 121-year-old Troy Hill Firehouse Engine #39 just got city approval to get repurposed. A $600,000 renovation project will turn the firehouse into a small tap house (operated by Abstract Brewing) with bar seating and a farm-to-table community market run by the neighboring restaurant, Scratch & Co.
